Questo è una di quelle cose che non avrei mai voluto scrivere in vita mia…ma si sa, la vita è anche questo.
Se n’è andato via il più grande di tutti, il più grande di tutti i tempi.
Eddie Van Halen ha messo in scena la più grande rivoluzione della chitarra rock nella seconda metà degli anni settanta, in un momento in cui il punk aveva preso il sopravvento e aveva messo nell’ombra la musica dei grandi chitarristi come Clapton, Hendrix, Blackmore, Page, Gilmour e tanti gli altri.
E’ arrivato come un salvatore, con la sua eruzione di note, fischi e botti, fraseggi velocissimi, ritmiche con un tiro micidiale, il rock blues che diventa hard rock, il suono che diventa higain, l’invenzione del floyd rose, lo sviluppo della tecnica del tapping portata a livelli mai visti prima, legati velocissimi e un tiro pazzesco….EVH è stato tutto questo e molto di più.
E’ stato la rinascita, è stato lo sviluppo. E’ stato il passato, presente e futuro della chitarra rock.
La sua perdita, per quelli come me, è stato un vero e proprio lutto. Sono cresciuto con la sua chitarra a risuonare nelle mie orecchie, a studiare i suoi fraseggi, le sue ritmiche, i suoi riff. C’è tanto di Lui nel mio modo di suonare, tutto. E’ stato il principale motivo per cui oggi suono la chitarra, il mio imprinting chitarristico. La musica del mio cuore, la colonna sonora della mia vita sono stati gli U2, li ascoltava mio cugino più grande di me, insieme alla musica dei film che guardavo negli anni ’80. Nel 1980 esce il film “Flash Gordon”, l’ho guardato talmente tante volte che la colonna sonora dei Queen mi è entrata dentro senza sapere chi fossero. Era il 1985 quando arriva il film “Ritorno al futuro”, avevo 9 anni e l’intervento di Van Halen attraverso il walkman di Marty McFly è stata una illuminazione, un segnale divino che ho colto soltanto qualche anno dopo. Nel 1986 è stato l’anno di “Higlander” e ancora i Queen, stavolta molto più rock e chitarristici. Quando nel 1991 ho iniziato a suonare la chitarra i mie idoli erano The Edge e Brian May, per me erano tutta la musica che amavo e con cui sono cresciuto. Un giorno scopro che Brian May aveva fatto un disco solista con un altro chitarrista, un certo Eddie Van Halen. Quel nome mi ha fatto tornare in mente la cassetta di Marty McFly e ho inziato a cercato il famigerato “Starfleet project”. Non l’ho mai trovato ma ho mi sono fatto registrare una cassetta da 90 minuti con Van Halen I su un lato e Van Halen II sull’altro. Non so dire esattamente quante volte io abbia ascoltato questa cassetta, ancora la conservo gelosamente. E’ stato amore dal primo riff, dal primissimo suono. Conoscevo gia tanto della chitarra rock ma mi mancava lui, il più grande di tutto. Dal 1991 ad oggi non ho mai smesso di ascoltarlo e seguirlo, trent’anni di devozione totale.
Nel 2002, a ventisei anni, vengo contattato dalla Playgame music per fare una VHS, poi divenuta un DVD, intitolata “Suonare nello stile di Eddie Van Halen”, è stata una delle cose più belle, importanti e prestigiose della mia carriera nella musica. Erano anni in cui non esisteva youtube, non c’erano tutorial, videolezioni, insomma fare un video e trovarlo in vendita nei migliori negozi di strumenti musicali di tutta Italia è stato un sogno diventato realtà, per un giovane di 26 anni che intraprendeva i primi passi nel mondo del lavoro.
Grazie EVH, a te devo molto, tutto quello che da te ho imparato è stato fondamentale per la mia crescita artistica e professionale.
Non dimenticherò mai il tuo sorriso quando suoni e invece scorderò spesso la sesta corda a Re per suonare “Unchained”

The greatest of all, the greatest of all time is gone.
Eddie Van Halen staged the greatest rock guitar revolution in the second half of the seventies, at a time when punk had taken over and overshadowed the music of great guitarists like Clapton, Hendrix, Blackmore, Page, Gilmour and many others.
He arrived as a savior, with his eruption of notes, whistles and bangs, very fast phrasing, incredible timing, the blues rock that becomes hard rock, the sound that becomes higain, the invention of the floyd rose, the tapping technique brought to levels never seen before, linked very fast and a crazy shot …. EVH was all this and much more.
It was the rebirth, it was the development. It was the past, present and future of the rock guitar.
His loss, for those like me, was a real grief. I grew up with his guitar ringing in my ears, studying his phrasing, his rhythms, his riffs. There is so much of Him in my playing, everything. It was the main reason why I play guitar today, my guitar imprint. The music of my heart, the soundtrack of my life was U2, my older cousin listened to them, along with the music of the movies I watched in the 80s. In 1980 the movie “Flash Gordon” came out, I watched it so many times that the Queen soundtrack entered me without knowing who they were. It was 1985 when the movie “Back to the future” was released, I was 9 years old and Van Halen through Marty McFly’s Walkman was an enlightenment, a divine signal that I caught only a few years later. In 1986 it was the year of “Higlander” and Queen again, this time was much more rock and guitar oriented. When I started playing guitar in 1991 my idols were The Edge and Brian May, they were all the music I loved and grew up with. One day I discover that Brian May had made a solo record with another guitarist, a certain Eddie Van Halen. That name reminded me of Marty McFly’s tape and I started looking for the “Starfleet project” album. I never found it but I had a 90 minute cassette recorded with Van Halen I on one side and Van Halen II on the other. I can’t say exactly how many times I’ve listened to this tape, I still keep it jealously. It was love from the first riff, from the very first sound. I already knew a lot about rock guitar but I missed him, the greatest of all. Since 1991 I have never stopped listening to and following him, thirty years of total devotion.
In 2002, at the age of twenty-six, I was contacted by Playgame music to make a VHS, which later became a DVD, entitled “Playing in the style of Eddie Van Halen”, was one of the most beautiful, important and prestigious things in my career in music. Those were years in which there was no youtube, there were no tutorials, video lessons, in short, making a video and finding it for sale in the best musical instrument shops throughout Italy was a dream come true, for a 26-year-old young man who was undertaking the first steps into the world of work.
